Job Title: Industrial Relations & Compliance Specialist

Location: Ikeja, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Purpose

The Industrial Relations and Compliance Specialist will manage employee relations, ensure compliance with labour laws and foster good relationships with union representatives at Ikeja Electric. Reporting to the People Operations Manager, this role will oversee conflict resolution, compliance audits and union interactions, maintain open communication in a unionized environment to support a collaborative and compliant workplace in line with Ikeja Electric’s HR transformation agenda.

Job Responsibilities

Union Relations and Engagement:

  • Be the primary point of contact with union representatives, addressing employee concerns, contractual obligations and labour relations matters.
  • Coordinate and participate in regular and ad-hoc meetings with union officials, provide policy updates and resolve concerns.
  • Work with unions to resolve issues proactively, ensure alignment with company policies and values.

Employee Relations Management:

  • Manage employee relations cases, including grievances and disputes in line with labour agreements and company policies.
  • Work with managers and union representatives to resolve workplace conflicts fairly and transparently.
  • Facilitate mediation and conflict resolution sessions to promote a respectful workplace.

Policy Compliance and Auditing:

  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with company policies, labour agreements and regulatory standards.
  • Develop strategies to enhance policy awareness and update policies to reflect changes in labour laws and union agreements.
  • Be a resource for employees, managers and union representatives on compliance matters.

Disciplinary Process Support:

  • Support disciplinary processes by gathering information, documenting proceedings and provide recommendations for fair outcomes.
  • Ensure disciplinary actions align with Ikeja Electric’s code of conduct, labour laws and business interests while being transparent.
  • Work with union officials during disciplinary processes involving union members.

Labour Relations and Compliance Training:

  • Stay updated on labour laws, union agreements and industrial relations best practices, advise HR and managers.* Train employees on union relations, compliance and employee rights.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies on labour matters, keep stakeholders informed.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Track data on employee relations, union interactions and compliance audits to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide regular reports to People Operations Manager with insights and recommendations.
  • Use data to pre-empt union concerns.

Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Relations, Human Resources Management, Law, Business Administration or related field.
  • Professional certification (e.g. CIPM, SHRM or equivalent) is an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in industrial/employee relations, compliance or human resources, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Experience in union relations, collective bargaining and conflict resolution.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Nigerian Labour Laws, Trade Union Acts and employment regulations.
  • Compliance audits and investigations.
  • Negotiation, mediation and conflict management.
  • Union reps and stakeholders relationship building.
  • Communication, documentation and report writing.
  • High integrity, confidentiality and attention to detail.
